James was born in Chikwawa district in the southern region of Malawi and has grown up there. While both of his parents are still
living, they divorced some time ago. James and his sister continued to go to school, and James just completed his high school degree in 2023. He applied to attend the DTI program this year, with the aim of better knowing the Bible so that he can help lead and preach in the church, as well as reach those who do not know Christ. When asked what he hopes to learn while studying in the DTI program, he responded saying, in addition to gaining a greater understanding of the Bible, he hopes to learn skills that will help him in his daily life. In his free time, Afunika enjoys reading, listening to music, and singing. Like many Malawians, he currently farms maize, beans and other crops as a means of food and income. His goal is to find a ministry job some day that will allow him to disciple others, as well as provide financial support for himself.
