Afunika (which means, "he is important") was born in Phalombe district in the southern region of Malawi and has grown up there. His parents divorced when he was 16, but he continued to live in Phalombe with his brother and three sisters, and was able to finish high school and receive his diploma when he was 18. He applied to attend the DTI program this year, with the aim of gaining knowledge and to learn new ways he can be effective in spreading the word of God. When asked what he hopes to learn while studying in the DTI program, he responded saying he would like to gain more understanding about why God allows people to pass through suffering and hard times. In his free time, Afunika enjoys reading, especially learning about new theories and discoveries. He currently uses small scale farming as his means of income. His goal is to continue his theological studies in the future and find a way to spread God’s kingdom while providing financially for himself.
